UNC System: On-campus students must leave residence halls unless given an exception

The north side of Spencer Residence Hall faces Franklin Street on Sunday, Mar. 1, 2020. Built in 1924, Spencer was the first all-female residence hall, but is now co-ed.

The UNC System is instructing students who live in university housing to return to their permanent residences unless granted an exception by their institution, the system announced Tuesday.

This measure will take effect at UNC System institutions including UNC-Chapel Hill. This is intended "to substantially reduce the number of students on campus and in university housing," the UNC System said in a press release.

According to the press release, UNC System institutions will:

  • Tell students who live on campus to return to their permanent address unless given exceptions — which will be limited to "situations where students establish significant need" to live in university housing
  • Create an exceptions process, including a health screening, for students who need to remain in university housing
  • Reduce campus dining to "takeout or similar options"

UNC previously announced that campus was open and operational, but students were encouraged to move away from campus if possible.

The UNC System email reiterated that institutions should cancel gatherings of 50 or more people, unless given approval from the institution's chancellor. UNC Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz previously announced that all campus events with more than 50 attendees were to be canceled.

"Keep in mind the CDC and White House  have recommended avoidance of gatherings of more than 10 people," the UNC System press release said.

Individual institutions will provide detailed updates for their specific campuses, according to the press release.
